Monica – Limited Edition for Mother’s Day 2020
This year we want to celebrate Mother’s Day with you with even greater strength. Here, then, is Monica, a limited edition that, as last year, we created specifically to celebrate this important occasion, which brings us all closer together in honour of this simple image — and perhaps for that very reason the one truly shared by every culture: a mother is always a mother, in every corner of the world, embodying unconditional love and the need to believe in a wonderful future.
Monica holds in her hands small flowers, simple and pure, humble yet very generous, bearing an unusual and evocative name: Forget-me-not — a plea made from the heart: remember those who love you… The forget-me-not is a symbol of memory, love and hope; it is a flower reserved for the people dearest to us, whose image we keep in our hearts, and according to Pliny the Elder this little plant carries protection from all that might sadden or grieve us.
Like these tiny little flowers, our figurine’s eyes look at us with their intense blue, while her full lips are tinted a soft, delicate red.
Her pose represents care for our closest bonds, but also the wish to protect them without confining them. So her hands come together to show and, at the same time, protect the flowers, while her torso leans towards us lightly, but her legs are gently bent and her feet drawn in, almost shyly, almost with reserve, portrayed in defence of her own inner self.
Finally, her hairstyle recalls the iconography linked to Art Nouveau (the Liberty style): a thin ribbon encircles her head, gathering her hair, which nonetheless falls softly over her shoulders.
In contrast with the intense blue of the forget-me-nots, the dress is pink, the colour of mothers, with a geometric print softened by a gentle grey. The cut of the dress is simple but not obvious: the sheet-modelling is done separately, as if we wanted to create a standalone object; working almost as with origami, we manage to achieve clean, even draping which, once applied to the figurine’s body, follows its lines without losing its shape. The rigour of the skirt is then softened by a collar in soft, pure-white tulle, with an irregular, airy ruffle. The dress’s details are matched by the shoes, a deep, vivid red, which stands out from the dress’s pastel tones and brings vibrancy to the figure.
Finally, the serial number is hand-painted on the leg, next to the Sibania – made in Italy mark.
That blue and bright-eyed floweret of the brook,
hope’s gentle gem, the sweet Forget-me-not.
[Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 1802 “The keepsake”]
